The advanced seminar for new drivers (ASF, Aufbauseminar für Fahranfänger) is a seminar required by law that you can be ordered to attend during your probationary period. You have to take part if you have committed one category A offence (serious) or two category B offences (less serious) during probation.
The ASF is not a punishment, but an opportunity to reflect. In small groups, together with other new drivers, you analyse critical traffic situations and your own driving behaviour. The aim is to recognise risks early and to drive more safely in the future.
How the ASF works
Four seminar sessions
Each 135 minutes (2 hours 15 minutes) long, spread over 2 to 4 weeks.
Small groups
No more than 6 people, for intensive work as a group.
Practical training drive
With your instructor and direct feedback on the way you drive.
ASF certificate
You then hand it in to the driving licence authority.
The authority will tell you the deadline for taking part. Get in touch with us early, so that you get a date in good time.
Frequently asked questions about the ASF
You are required to take part in the ASF if, during your probationary period (2 years after getting your licence), you have committed one category A offence (for example alcohol or excessive speed) or two category B offences (less serious). The authority will send you an official notice with a deadline.
Yes. With category A offences and some category B offences, the probationary period is extended from 2 to 4 years. The ASF itself does not shorten the probationary period, but it is mandatory and prevents worse consequences such as losing your driving licence.
If you miss the deadline for taking part in the ASF, the driving licence authority can revoke your licence. That is why it is very important to book a date early and to hand in the certificate to the authority on time.
The advanced seminar consists of four sessions of 135 minutes each plus a practical training drive. That adds up to 9 hours of seminar time, spread over a period of 2 to 4 weeks.
We run the ASF on a regular basis. As a rule, a date within 2 to 4 weeks is possible. Give us a call or send us a message, so that together we can find a date that fits your deadline.
