If you move to Germany with a driving licence from a country outside the EU, you may only keep using it for a limited time. As a rule, it stays valid for 6 months from the day you register your residence in Germany. After that, you need a German driving licence.
Whether you have to take a test depends on the country where you got your licence. For some countries the licence is converted without a test, for others you need the theory test, the practical test or both. A licence from the EU or EEA remains valid in Germany and does not need to be converted.
If you do need to take a test, come to us. You don't need full training: there are no mandatory lessons and no required special drives. Together we work out what you really need and prepare you specifically for the test in Frankfurt.

Frequently asked questions about licence conversion

That depends on the country where you got your licence. Germany has agreed rules with many countries: for some, both tests are waived, for others only one of them. For all other countries you have to pass both theory and practical. The driving licence authority makes the binding decision, and we're happy to help you assess your case.
Usually your foreign licence with a translation, your ID card or passport, a biometric passport photo, an eye test and a first aid course. The driving licence authority will give you the exact list. You can take the first aid course directly through us.
There is no required minimum. If you already drive confidently, a few lessons are often enough to get used to German rules such as giving way to the right, checking your blind spot and how the test works. After a first lesson, we'll tell you honestly where you stand.
