The class A1 licence allows you, from the age of 16, to ride light motorcycles with an engine capacity of up to 125 cc and a maximum of 11 kW (15 hp). It is the ideal way into the world of motorcycling and also the first stage of the step-by-step licence system on the way to the full class A.

What A1 training includes

Theory & motorcycle technology

Complete theory training for beginners from the age of 16: 12 double lessons of basic material and 4 double lessons of class A1 specific material, clearly explained so you are well prepared for the test.

Mandatory practical drives

Training ground and city traffic, plus 12 special rides of 45 minutes each: 5 country road rides, 4 motorway rides and 3 night rides.

With class A1 you can ride light motorcycles up to 125 cc / 11 kW as well as light three-wheeled vehicles. From the age of 18, with two years of A1 experience, you can move up to class A2 in a simplified way.

Getting started and moving up with A1

01

Direct entry from the age of 16

A1 is the earliest possible motorcycle licence in Germany. You can already be out on the road on a motorcycle at the age of 16.

  • Registration possible from the age of 15 and a half.

02

Moving up to A2 from 18

Two years after passing your A1 test you can upgrade to class A2 from the age of 18. You do not need to take the theory test again, and the practical test is simplified.

  • Quick progress thanks to the step-by-step licence system.

03

Combining A1 and BF17

Many learners do A1 and BF17 together. Because the basic questions are the same for both classes, you only take one theory test.

  • Basic material only once, plus the specific material for both classes.

Frequently asked questions about class A1

You can take the theory test 3 months before your 16th birthday at the earliest, and the practical test 1 month before at the earliest. So sign up with us in good time and you can ride off right on your 16th birthday.

Important: the upgrade depends on the date you passed your A1 test. Exactly two years must have passed since that day, and you must be 18. Then you can upgrade to A2. You do not need to take the theory test again, and the practical test is simplified. We will support you with the upgrade.
