The class A2 licence covers motorcycles with a maximum of 35 kW (48 hp) and a power-to-weight ratio of no more than 0.2 kW/kg. It is available from the age of 18 and forms the middle stage between A1 (125 cc) and the unrestricted class A.

What A2 training includes

Theory & vehicle technology

Complete theory training for first-time learners. With class B you need fewer theory lessons and take a shorter theory test. If you move up after holding class A1 for two years, there is no theory test and you only need to take the practical test.

Mandatory drives incl. motorway

Training ground and city traffic, plus 12 special rides of 45 minutes each required by law: 5 country road rides, 4 motorway rides and 3 night rides.

With class A2 you may ride motorcycles up to 35 kW on all roads, including the motorway. After two years of A2 you can move up to the full class A in a simplified way, so at 20 at the earliest. Without A2, direct entry to class A is only possible from the age of 24.

Who can get an A2 licence?

01

Direct entry from the age of 18

If you want to get straight into motorcycling at 18, you can start with A2 without having done A1 first.

  • Registration possible from the age of 17 and a half.

02

Moving up from A1

After holding class A1 for two years you can upgrade to A2 from the age of 18. There is no theory test and the practical test is simplified. More power, quickly and without any hassle.

  • A cheaper upgrade than starting training from scratch.

03

Moving up to class A from 20

With two years of A2 experience and once you have turned 20, you can move up to the full class A, in a simplified way without taking the theory test again.

  • The logical next step for ambitious riders.
