Ride scooters and light motorcycles up to 125 cc without taking a test: key number 196 extends your class B licence.

Other licence classes

With key number 196 you may ride light motorcycles up to 125 cc and 11 kW (15 hp) on your car licence, whether that is a scooter or a motorcycle. You must be at least 25 and have held class B for five years. Instead of a test, you complete a short rider training course with us in theory and practice.

What the B196 training includes

Theory

At least 4 double lessons of 90 minutes: technology and safety gear, riding physics on two wheels, hazard awareness and typical situations in city traffic.

Practice

At least 5 double lessons of 90 minutes: basic manoeuvres on the training ground, then city traffic and country roads on a light motorcycle.

There is no theory or practical test. After the training we give you a certificate, and the licensing authority uses it to add key number 196 to your driving licence.

Requirements and process

At least 25 years old

B196 is designed for experienced drivers. You must be at least 25 years old when the key number is added to your licence.

  • No eye test and no first aid course required.

Five years of class B

You have held a class B licence for at least five years. It does not matter how much you have driven during that time.

Registration with the authority

With our certificate you apply to the licensing authority for a new licence showing key number 196. Only then may you start riding.

No, key number 196 is only valid in Germany. If you also want to ride a 125 cc abroad, you need a class A1 licence.

The training is not credited. For class A2 or class A you go through the regular training with tests. Your riding experience on a 125 cc is still a good start, though.
